According to Packaging Europe, a flow-control technology firm helped a pulp and paper mill in the United States lower its water consumption significantly and achieve savings in total ownership costs. The project tackled recurring seal failures and high water usage that were affecting the facility's operational reliability and expenses. The mill had been facing frequent mechanical seal breakdowns, with an average period between repairs of three weeks. These failures led to repeated production stoppages, greater maintenance demands, and elevated operating costs. The previous sealing setup also used a continuous flow of water per minute without any conservation systems, presenting both financial and environmental issues. The technology provider implemented a heavy-duty dual cartridge mechanical seal featuring a specific face technology designed for challenging slurry and abrasive pulp uses. This technology is engineered to allow stable, non-contact operation, which lowers the need for barrier fluid and can enhance reliability and energy efficiency. A seal reservoir and a filtration system were also added during the installation. Following the upgrade, the mill extended its seal life from a matter of weeks to more than a year while drastically cutting water demand. The reported outcome was a 90% reduction in water consumption and total cost of ownership savings amounting to $75,000.
